The Team

PInCH's multidisciplinary team comprises highly experienced clinicians, scientists, and engineers. Our focus has been on grounding our technology in research, and more than half our team hold posts at prestigious research institutions including University of Oxford and University of Southampton.

Leadership

Professor Sir Nigel Shadbolt FREng FRS

Chairman

Sir Nigel is Principal of Jesus College, Oxford and Professorial Research Fellow in the Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford. He is Chairman of the Open Data Institute, which he co-founded with Sir Tim Berners-Lee, and a Visiting Professor in Computer Science at the University of Southampton. In June 2009 together with Sir Tim Berners-Lee he was appointed Information Advisor by the UK Prime Minister to help transform public access to Government information. A major output of this work has been the widely acclaimed data.gov.uk, a single point of access for Government public data.

Nigel leads the development of our bespoke software platforms for clinical data management storage, presentation, and integration with clinical practice and needs, but focused on the patient. His experience in AI and data transparency have been pivotal in the development of PInCH's mission.

Oscar Tymon

Commercial Director

Oscar is an entrepreneur and strategic advisor with extensive experience in the design and implementation of innovative solutions to complex business and risk financing problems across multiple sectors in the UK, US, and EU. His involvement spans a number of venture capital funded, early stage, fast growing companies across many sectors including life sciences, education and insurance. In 2001 Oscar took up a non-executive Director role with Education Overseas Limited, a company pioneering English Curriculum Education in the USA. He became Chairman of the company and remained until it achieved a successful exit to a major venture capital group.

Oscar has been instrumental in setting the commercial direction for PInCH. He has more than 15 years experience of venture capital and emerging company work and strategic start-up investments in many diverse companies.

Clinical Team

Professor John M Morgan MA MD FRCP FESC

Clinical Director

John heads the PInCH clinical team. He is a cardiologist and Professor of Medicine at the University of Southampton. John became a fellow of the Royal College in 1995, developing an interest in cardiac arrhythmogenesis. John has a history of industry collaboration and has been a leading adviser to large multinational companies including Medtronic (principal European consulting physician), St Jude Medical, and Boston Scientific.

John led the introduction to the NHS of remote disease management technologies for pacemakers, ICDs and diagnostic implantable devices. This was a major contribution to modernising NHS clinical practices. He lectures on the use of remote technologies for the 2020 Health think tank. John directs PInCH's clinical team and plays an integral role in the development of LifeCourse.

Dr Paul R Roberts MD FRCP

Consultant Cardiologist

Paul is Consultant in Cardiology and Electrophysiology at the Wessex Cardiac Unit, University Hospital Southampton. He has a research and clinical expertise in most areas of cardiac electrophysiology. He spent two years in the United States at several cardiac units including the Cleveland Clinic and was awarded his MD for clinical research in 2000 at the University of Leeds. He leads the Cardiac Rhythm Management Service for the Wessex region that covers a population of 3.5 million, and provides the tertiary referral centre for all patients with complex arrhythmias, both adult and paediatric.

Paul forms part of our core clinical team and advises PInCH on research directions, particularly around heart failure and atrial fibrillation. He has been instrumental in the development of our LifeCourse Clinic platform for utilising patient-generated health data in clinical settings.

Professor Nick Curzen BM PhD FRCP

Consultant Cardiologist

Nick is Professor of Interventional Cardiology at Southampton University and a Consultant Cardiologist with a special interest in coronary and aortic valve intervention. Nick has been national expert adviser on STEMI to the Prime Minister’s Directive Unit and to the NICE appraisals of prasugrel and ticagrelor. He is Honorary Secretary of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society, having previously been its Education Officer, and wrote the UK curriculum for subspecialty training in interventional cardiology.

As clinical lead for the Coronary Research Group he has an active interest in research and has published over 130 peer review articles, 25 book chapters and has edited 3 cardiology books, including the Oxford Textbook of Interventional Cardiology. He actively advises PInCH on research directions, particularly around heart failure and atrial fibrillation.

Product Development Team

Dr Peter West PhD MEng MSc

Technical Lead

Peter manages the product development team and is the system architect for LifeCourse, which he developed in 2015. He has a background in computer science and agile project management and recently completed his PhD at the University of Southampton focused on the use of patient-generated data (such as from Fitbits) within clinical settings. He is specialised in participatory design within healthcare and an expert communicator, having previously been Digital Health Policy Advisor to the Cabinet Office.

Peter's award-winning research has informed PInCH's approach by examining the potential for greater clinical adoption and strategic use of patient self-tracked data. He has experience prototyping both research tools and production apps for patients. He has unsurpassed technical experience for both rapid design and development of front-end (web) and scalable back-end data services.

Dr Max Van Kleek PhD

Lead Research Scientist

Max is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford. He lectures information and interaction design at the University of Southampton and Open Data Institute in London, and researches behavioural interfaces for life management and privacy-centric personal data architectures. He has worked at PARC, IBM Research, the MIT Media Lab, MIT CSAIL, Sun Microsystems Laboratories, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and Nokia Research, and has more than 70 peer-reviewed pieces at conferences, workshops, and journals.

He has extensive experience in both building and designing systems for helping end-users effectively manage their data. Max specialises in human-computer interaction and leads research within PInCH, including elicitation of feedback from doctor/patient advisory groups. Max's work within the team has led us to focus on user experience and accessibility towards greater patient adoption.

Alex Zugravu MEng

Software Engineer

Alex joined PInCH in 2015. He is a Computer Science graduate from the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. He has extensive experience in full-stack web development, particularly with front-end frameworks and mobile app development. He has specialism in digital healthcare information standards and has influenced our tech stack at PInCH, particularly with the core integration of the FHIR open standard and SNOMED-CT within LifeCourse.

Alex leads the design and development of our app-based technologies. He is an advocate for high quality code and has focused the team on using test-driven development and automated build processes.

Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi FREng FIEEE FIET FBCS

Technology Advisor

Bashir is Dean of Faculty Engineering and Physical Sciences, University of Southampton. In 2009, he was elected Fellow of the IEEE, the institute's most prestigious honour, for contributions to test and design of low power integrated circuits. Recently, he was awarded £5.6M by the Engineering Physical Science Research Council to set up a research center developing innovative energy-efficient and dependable hardware and software technologies for future embedded and mobile electronic devices.

Bashir is internationally recognised for his research in methods, algorithms, and design automation tools for low-power design and test of systems-on-chip and embedded computing systems. His research results have been adopted by UK and international companies. His academia and industry background and expertise in electronic sciences has informed development of PInCH’s experimental healthcare data hardware

Business Development Team

Alan Grant

Business Development

Alan brings a business background in company financial management and development. He has broad knowledge and experience of insurance capital markets, Lloyd’s Corporate Member formation and tiered capital/gearing transactions. He has various higher management courses commensurate with FSA and CII CPE requirements. He is a Member of the Insurance Institute of London, Reinsurance Committee, was Lloyd’s BDU (Business Development Unit) Board Member 1998 & 1999 comprising International Department, Marketing & Distribution and sat on the 1997 Lloyd’s Non-Marine Association Market Panel on Corporation Expense.
